The gnittinK Room takes an experimental, process-based approach to knitting. Instead of aiming at the production of finished objects (a pair of socks, a scarf, a pullover) it explores alternative cross-connections. This includes pre- and post-digital methods of remix, sampling, cross-coding, fiber-cryptography and analogue computing.

What could serve as a knitting instruction that wasn’t meant to? What elements of the knitting process – instructions, notations, instruments, yarn patterns, hand movements – bear parallels to other fields and usages? What textile form could a twitter-feed be translated into? What kind of music could a sock yarn pattern generate?

The gnittinK Room collects and generates patterns and prototypes that re-think the common idea of knitting (and with it, of digital practice in general). This includes pixel patterns, music notations, navigation protocols, algorithmic writings, cooking recipes, as well as practical/conceptual systematics.

TgR is part of the exhibition “Neue Masche” (Rethinking Needlework), April 29 – July 24, 2011 at Museum Bellerive in Zürich, Switzerland.

MIT SEIFE UND GABELN ermittelt aus gegenwärtiger Perspektive soziale, politische und kulturelle Bedingungen für Glück. Schürmann Berlin Online-Archiv

Schürmann Berlin ist der Schauraum der privaten Kunstsammlung Schürmann. Das Online-Archiv zeigt, neben einer dokumentarischen Übersicht der bisherigen Ausstellung, vor allem die dahinterstehende Denkweise: ein Verständnis der Sammlung als bewegliches, oft eigendynamisches System.

Durch eine offene Zettelkasten-Navigation wird dem Betrachter ermöglicht, die einzelnen Objekte (Werke, Detail- und Ausstellungsansichten) selbst anzuordnen. In diesem Betrachtungsprozess unterlaufen die anfänglich chronologischen Bilderstapel einer subjektiven Umordnung.

Gleichzeitig hinterlassen diese Betrachtungen selbst eine Spur. Nachfolgende Besucher der Seite können sich die vorhergegangenen “Viewings” vorführen lassen, sie vergleichen und sich möglicherweise fragen, wer hier eigentlich wen betrachtet.

a fan scarf remix project
(2006-2010)

Schalalala versteht den Fanschal als kommunikatives Medium, das seinem Benutzer (Fan/Beobachter) zur freien Meinungsäußerung dienen kann. Anstatt nur für Mannschaft A oder B sein zu können, wird dem Fan ein erweiterter Artikulationsspielraum ermöglicht. Auf einem Online-Interface können bestehende Fanschals zerschnipselt und zu neuen Aussagen zusammengesetzt werden. Alle Remixe können anschließend als Strickmuster heruntergeladen werden.
Schalalala verbindet digitale Remix-Praxis mit dem traditionellen Handwerk des Strickens. Seit seinem Beginn während der Fussball-WM 2006 wird es in Ausstellungs-Workshops und Strickzirkeln fortgeführt.

Schalalala bridges the gap between virtual and physical practice (between digital remix and knitting) on the basis of sports fan scarfs. Confronting the medium’s limited choice of being either for team A or team B, the project takes a deconstructive approach. Fans can remix existing fan scarfs on a specially developed web interface. Each remix can then be downloaded as a knitting pattern (translating pixels into stitches), to turn the virtual remixes into physical ones again.
Schalalala is an open collaborative project with various contributors. Since its beginning during the Soccer world cup 2006, it is continued in exhibition workshops and knitting circles.

Reverse Engineering
a collective reading attempt
(2004)

Reverse Engineering ist ein kollektiver Leseversuch. Ausgehend von einem zufällig befleckten Malerhemd wird versucht, die darin potentiell beinhalteten Informationen zu extrahieren und imaginäre Ursprungsformen zu rekonstruieren. Dabei werden bestehende Interpretations- und Rekonstruktionsmethoden zu Rate gezogen, die mit Fleckenstrukturen als semantische Grundlage arbeiten. Vorgehenslogik aus verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen und künstlerischen Kontexten wird kombiniert.
Das Ziel dieses Untersuchungs-Prozesses bleibt unbestimmt. Ergebnisse beinhalten Partitur-Erkennung, Kochrezept-Rekonstruktion, physikalische Schwerpunktsberechnung, automatische OCR-Schrifterkennung und geologische Erdschichtenanalyse.

Reverse Engineering is a collective reading attempt, in which random stain structures are analyzed through multiple context filters. Originally emerged by accident on an artist‘s shirt during his painting process, these stains are a starting point for a growing cloud of meta-information. A range of scientific and artistic methods dealing with stains and similar visual information are applied to interpret, extract and reconstruct any context-specific information contained.
This process stays at a unfinished state, each method has a right of its own. Research results include music score recognition, cooking recipe reconstruction, center of gravity calculation, automatic character recognition (OCR) and geologic layer analysis.

This model is an attempt of a non-musical remix of the music of Mouse On Mars. The used material are texts and objects in relation to previous cooperations with the band, as well as projects from the FH Aachen Design Department’s Soundlab. On the occasion of the book and exhibition »doku/fiction – Mouse On Mars reviewed & remixed« at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
